BIMplus Shares Our Insights on the Future of Construction Waste Management

RECONMATIC project partners Vitalij Tetervov and Chris Crookes from BIMBox have contributed the final article on the WASTEie initiative to BIMplus, focusing on the future of construction waste management. The article reflects on the progress made so far and offers a look ahead at future developments.

BIMplus is the go-to online resource for anyone interested in BIM, information management, and digital construction, and their adoption across the built and managed environment sector.

In this latest article, the authors discuss:

  • Progress and Focus on Standardisation: As part of the RECONMATIC project, the WASTEie initiative is focused on standardising construction and demolition (C&D) waste management data through digital transformation and openBIM standards, to enhance material reuse and recycling.

  • Integration of openBIM and IFC 4.3: WASTEie has embraced openBIM principles, incorporating IFC 4.3 and the buildingSMART data dictionary (bSDD), to create a standardized dataset for describing C&D waste and improving interoperability within industry workflows.

  • Linking to Existing Research: The team has leveraged existing research, such as the Decommissioning and Reuse Data Dictionary and other European projects like RecycleBIM, to build a solid foundation for the WASTEie data dictionary.

  • Use Cases for the Whole Life Cycle: The article explores key use cases, such as the reuse or recycling of components and materials throughout a building’s life cycle, with a focus on reducing waste.

  • Testing and Future Steps: The WASTEie data dictionary, including classifications based on EWC codes, will be tested in ongoing case studies focused on automated waste management solutions, aimed at improving pre-demolition audits and material recycling processes.
